Dutch seaside town of Domburg achieves official ‘Seaside Health Resort’ status

June 30, 2017

DOMBURG, the Netherlands – Domburg has been officially recognised as a Seaside Health Resort, on satisfying the criteria set out by governing industry bodies, Deutscher Heilbäder Verband and European Spas Association (ESPA). The announcement was made early in April. To qualify for the title, resorts must demonstrate proven healing properties of the local seawater, climate and products deriving from or related to the local seawater (such as mud, salts and seaweed). Also taken into account when awarding the denomination are the activities, therapies and facilities on offer at a resort, together with the wider environment and surroundings. The notions of vitality and wellbeing remaining key throughout the process.

The seawater at Domburg was tested by the internationally renowned SGS Institut Fresenius. Test results showed that the seawater in this area contained adequate amounts of sole, or sea salt, to be considered ‘healing’, thanks to its particular composition and physical properties.

The news establishes the Domburg coast as an approved destination for balneo (water) and thalasso therapies for the prevention illness and promotion of health. Spa culture is nothing new to Domburg, however, with archaeological excavations uncovering thermal baths dating back to the Roman era.

The region’s surrounding natural landscape has been a contributing factor towards its newly acquired Health Resort status, remembering that contact with nature boots human health. Nearby nature reserves, the Manteling and Oranjezon are protected areas and belong to the preservation programme, Natura 2000 and in 2013, the seaside spot was voted the country’s cleanest beach.

Domburg offers a wealth of therapies and other wellness possibilities. The sun, sand and fresh seawater play key roles in relaxation massages and detox programmes at the resort. Courses and classes can be taken in the open-air and on the beach, with others available in the town’s hotels and yoga centre.

Domburg’s ambition to become an internationally recognised destination for vitality and wellbeing is a step closer thanks to its designation as official seaside “Health Resort”, where excellent service and a healthy lifestyle come hand in hand.
