Why yoga? This is why!

September 28, 2018
Everyone who does it, swears by it. But why? What is it about yoga that makes it so good for us? We’ve listed 7 benefits of yoga for you here.

1. For flexibility

You’ll be able to see it for yourself after a week’s holiday at Absolute Sanctuary, for example. There, you’ll take at least one yoga class each day (up to five, if you fancy) and will really feel your body become more supple and mobile. And no, you don’t need to be flexible to start yoga; you’ll become flexible from doing it.

2. For posture

The muscles become stronger and longer. The shoulders realign and the back straightens up: your body effectively opens up. You’ll feel it instantly at a yoga midweek with Els, where there’s plenty of time for explanations. As a result, your posture will improve, becoming better, straighter, stronger and more open.

3. For relaxation

In contrast to other forms of exercise, yoga also specifically targets the calming of the mind. Which is precisely why it has such a relaxing effect – more so than other sports or physical activities. Which in turn is precisely why a yoga retreat is doubly relaxing: a) it’s a holiday and b) you’re doing yoga, on holiday.

4. For awareness

Awareness is key: an awareness which enables us to make better decisions in our lives and create the life we want. For this reason, yoga plays an important part. A conscious awareness of our bodies helps us see what’s going on within and therefore be more in touch with what’s good for us.

5. For breathing

Yoga postures are practiced to the rhythm of the breath. Controlling the breath in this way slows it down; not only on the mat, but also off it. This in turn has a positive effect on blood pressure, hear rate, stress and the body’s overall functioning. Which is why many resorts, including Somatheeram Ayurveda Beach Resort and Manaltheeram Ayurveda Beach Resort also offer breathing classes in addition to the yoga classes.

6. For circulation

Movement boost the circulation, eliminating waste products and delivering fresh, oxygen-rich blood to nourish our organs and tissues. That’s why exercise is good for us. Yoga postures are particularly good because they also serve to cleanse the body from within. Experience it for yourself at a yoga weekend at Domburg, of VlodropFollow a class with a session in the sauna and you’ll come out feeling like a different person.

Last but not by any means least, yoga is good for YOU, as a person who needs time for themselves. During a yoga class, you only have to think about yourself – no one else. What’s more, you’re doing it for you and only for you. So treat yourself to a yoga retreat at Shanti Som in Malaga. You deserve it!
