Hotel details
Over 30 years’ experience plus one of the first Ayurveda resorts in the world. If you’re looking for authentic, traditional Ayurveda, Somatheeram Ayurveda Resort is the place for you.
Where you are going...
The southern Indian province of Kerala is the birthplace of Ayurveda. Hence the perfect place for an Ayurveda retreat. What’s more, Somatheeram’s location, on the sandy beach of the town of Kovalam in a tropical garden, makes this a wonderfully relaxing and beautiful spot.
Trivandrum airport: approx. 45-minute drive
Why you’ll love it...
Somatheeram is a true Ayurveda resort. With an Ayurveda treatment centre and on-site research centre, you can expect real professionalism here. But that isn’t the only thing. The beach, sea, palm trees, garden and cottages also give the resort a relaxed holiday feel. Somatheeram Ayurveda Resort is incidentally the big sister of nearby Manaltheeram Resort. The finer details aside, the two are similar. The main difference is that Somatheeram is slightly more spaciously laid out.
Wellness, Spa and Health
Somatheeram has been focusing on Ayurveda exclusively for three decades now. The resort has an Ayurveda academy and herb garden for producing its own medicines. It has also been awarded numerous national and international prizes for its therapies. The Ayurveda centre has 24 treatment rooms, 2 yoga studios, a beauty salon, dental practice and medicine shop. A team of 10 professional doctors and 50 therapists are ready to guide and treat you. Your programme will begin with an intake consultation. The Ayurveda doctor will determine your dosha type (body type) and establish a treatment plan. For the rest of your stay, you will be treated by the same therapist / masseur as much as possible.
Holistic Activities and Sports
- Yoga and meditation
- Occasional cultural activities are organised
- Numerous excursions can be made in the surroundings
- Chefs reveal the secrets of Ayurvedic cooking in cooking demonstrations
What’s on the Menu
The cuisine at Somatheeram Ayurveda Village is Ayurvedic and typically Keralan. This means a lot of rice, curries, coconut, vegetables and herbs. The restaurant serves an extensive buffet, whereby the tasty Ayurvedic dishes are labelled so that you know which are suitable for your dosha type and can compile your own meals. The restaurant offers no less than 250 different kinds of vegetarian dishes, salads and juices. If you don't follow an Ayurveda programme, you have an option to order from the a la carte menu against a surcharge.
We love
- The walk between the beach and cottage. Zigzag between the plant pots containing aromatic herbs. Gorgeous!
- The herbal oils used during the Ayurveda treatments are made by the hotel.
- The vast team of Ayurveda doctor's and therapists to guide you along your ayurveda experience!
Good to know
- The monsoon period, between June and September, is particularly suitable for an Ayurveda retreat.
- If you’d like to book an excursion, it is advisable to stay for longer than a week: during the first week, your body needs time to adjust and requires rest. An excursion would interrupt this.
- The hotel does not have a private beach, though a small section is reserved for the hotel. Locals can occasionally be seen walking around.
- We do offer the Standard rooms, although they are smaller and darker inside.
