What is a Destination Spa

A Destination spa is a type of spa that offers a comprehensive wellbeing experience focused on promoting health, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Unlike day spas, which typically offer individual treatments such as massages or facials, a Destination spa provides guests with a range of services, including healthy meals, fitness classes, wellbeing programs and holistic therapies, all designed to promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Destination spas are typically located in scenic, natural environments, such as mountains, deserts, or near bodies of water. They often require a minimum stay of several days to a week or more, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the experience and achieve long-term health and wellness benefits. The focus of a destination spa is on promoting a healthy lifestyle, and guests are often provided with education and guidance on nutrition, exercise, and stress management to help them maintain their wellness after leaving the spa. These types of spas are popular among people who are looking to improve their health, manage stress, or simply relax and rejuvenate.

What to expect in a Destination Spa

Destination spas aim to help you in achieving a healthier lifestyle. At a destination spa, guests can expect a broad variety of health and wellbeing programs such as fitness, detox yoga, weight loss, emotional healing, stress management, meditation, nutritional counseling and even medical services like acupuncture or aesthetic treatments. Each program offers various treatments such as holistic or medical assessments, body and facial treatments, complementary therapies, healthy (dietary) food, exercise and (holistic) activities. These programs will be tailored to your individual needs and will always include several treatments. A destination spa serves tasty healthy food and little or no alcohol. They organize various (holistic and sports) activities during the week such as yoga, meditation, pranayama or fitness classes. They may also offer workshops on personal development or mental coaching. Some may choose to only offer hotel rooms without TV's, to ensure you can fully relax and focus on your well-being.

What type of guests are staying at destination spa’s

Destination spas attract solo travelers from all over the world. They are wonderful places if you crave some alone time but are also great destinations to meet and connect with likeminded people. You might see couples, but you won’t find families with children. Those hotels are known for their quietness, peace and calm environment so you can fully relax. You can find destination spas in all sorts of great locations: in nature, mountains, country side or at the beach.

Holistic or medical approach

Please be aware that Destination spas either have a holistic or a medical approach to health. Or they offer a combination of those two. Depending which type of Destination spa you choose, your first consultation will be either with a Western doctor, a Naturopath, a Traditional Chinese Medicine or an Ayurveda doctor.
