For those who prefer not to travel too far, there's no longer a need to head to Asia for a quality Ayurvedic retreat. Perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, Port Salvi is a fantastic boutique Ayurvedic resort where the best of Ayurveda and the Mediterranean converge. With an in-house Ayurveda Team from India and Sri Lank (Ayurvedic doctor, therapists and cook) all ayurveda programs are as authentic as you could have it in those countries. English is the primary language. Port Salvi has recently undergone partial renovations and is nestled in a tranquil location, far from the bustle of mass tourism. Puurenkuur's Wellbeing Expert Kim Brouwer travelled to Spain to explore firsthand. Read her story!
As I step onto the grounds of Port Salvi, the first thought that comes to mind is, 'Surprisingly beautiful.' The hotel stands proudly on a rocky cliff, offering an impressive view of the sea. Together with the neighboring hotel, Eden Rock, where I also check in for my Port Salvi stay, it boasts a private beach. The area is surprisingly lush and green for a rocky terrain. I leisurely walk through well-maintained gardens adorned with palm trees swaying gracefully in the wind. The birds' melodies create a sense of calm and relaxation, enveloping me in a delightful serenity.
This is undoubtedly not the only destination in Europe for an Ayurvedic retreat. However, it stands out as one of the rare places where you don't feel like you're in Germany while on vacation. The presence of Spanish signs adds to the authentic holiday vibe. The entire hotel team and spa staff are fluent in English, making communication effortless. Moreover, the guests come from various parts of the world, not just Germany, which contributes to a delightful international atmosphere.
As I stay at Port Salvi, I witness a remarkable transformation taking place. The once somewhat disorganized and laid-back decor is now evolving into a modern and cozy retreat right before my eyes. The elegant vaulted ceilings add a touch of luxury to the atmosphere. The yoga studio, bathed in natural light, becomes a delightful sanctuary. From the yoga pavilion, a calming view of the sea unfolds, offering a serene backdrop that soothes the mind and creates a perfect space for relaxation.
As I enter the spa, the enticing scent of Ayurvedic herbs and oils envelops me, immediately creating a sense of comfort. Taking a deep breath, I feel an instant sense of tranquility. Besides offering tailor-made Ayurvedic treatments and therapies, there's a new sauna and steam bath available in a separate garden cottage, which can be reserved for private use. From this cozy cottage, you can once again enjoy a breathtaking view of the sea.
While Port Salvi is indeed an authentic Ayurvedic hotel, providing tailor-made treatments, guests do not follow Dosha-specific diets. Instead, the meals are thoughtfully balanced to cater to all Dosha types. Only if the Ayurvedic doctor identifies a significant imbalance will they advise excluding or incorporating certain foods. This information is then relayed to the kitchen for preparation.
My stay at Port Salvi concludes far too quickly. Feeling utterly relaxed and satisfied, I cruise back to Barcelona in my rental car, a journey that takes about an hour and twenty minutes. The charming city of Girona is a bit closer, only a half-hour drive away, along with Costa del Mar. Alternatively, guests who prefer not to drive can take advantage of the hotel's shuttle service from Barcelona. With my energy renewed, I am now prepared to embrace whatever lies ahead.
Just a stone's throw away from Port Salvi lies the enchanting coastal town of Sant Feliu de Guixols on the Costa Brava, Catalonia, Spain. This picturesque town offers Catalan culture, historical sites like the monastery and a charming promenade with shops, cafes and restaurants (delicious local food!). While it may seem a bit far to walk, you can easily hop into a short taxi ride from Port Salvi to Sant Feliu de Guixols. Alternatively, you can take a scenic drive to nearby destinations, such as the picturesque Tossa del Mar, which is just a half-hour drive away.
