What is a medical spa? (and the three best)

June 10, 2022

A medical spa is a middle ground between a medical clinic and a ‘normal’ spa. They are cropping up all over the world, bridging the gap between cosmetic care and regular wellness clinics. Medical spas usually employ a doctor who will perform minor cosmetic interventions ir where the spa programs are under supervision of a doctor. The definition of a ‘medical spa’ varies from country to country, so it’s recommended you check whether this is the case at your medical spa of choice: Is a medical team or a doctor present? Who carries out the treatments? Is this person qualified to do so? These questions and similar are worth posing before you travel. You’d also be within your right to request before and after photos of patients who’ve been treated by the doctor who would treat you. Of course, medical spas also offer traditional spa treatments, such as massage, seaweed wraps and sea salt scrubs. Medical spas are the ideal destination for those looking for a few days of restful recovery following a cosmetic intervention.

Treatments

Each medical spa will offer different treatments. Some specialise in the treatment of acne, others may specialise in treating rosacea, for instance. Make sure you research the options carefully to identify the best spa to meet your needs. Laser treatment for permanent hair removal is often offered at a medical spa too. As are Botox, chemical peels and microdermabrasion. Medical spas can also embrace alternative schools of medicine such as acupuncture, nutrition, traditional Chinese medicine and naturopathy.

Lefay Resort & Spa Lake Garda, Italy

First and foremost, this 5* resort has an incredible view of Lake Garda. Located within a 27-hectare park, Lefay is surrounded by olive groves and citrus trees. The medical spa here offers a combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine and western health care. Treatments cover standard spa staples such as wraps, massages and facials, with the opportunity to relax in any of five different saunas or the glorious saltwater pool with those stunning lake views. There’s also an extensive jogging route as well as a number of therapeutic gardens – perfect for meditation. Invigorating massages, hydrotherapy and rebalancing therapies are also on the menu. Individually tailored diets are complied with a view to weight loss, reducing stress, overcoming insomnia or combatting signs of ageing. The resort also boasts an on-call physiotherapist and osteopath. The Traditional Chinese Medicine therapists perform a specialist form of acupuncture called tuina. Instead of using needles, therapists work with pressure points and moxibustion. Moxibustion involves burning a herbal substance near certain areas, increasing the efficiency of the massage.

Lefay has two restaurants serving a range of healthy foods, plus other dishes including Italian pastas.
