Thalasso holidays

Thalasso takes its name from the mythological Roman sea goddess, Thalassa. The ancient Romans and Greeks were already aware of the healing powers of the sea. The modern science that is thalassotherapy today has evolved from centuries of knowledge. A thalasso spa uses all the goodness the sea has to offer, including sea air, seawater, algae, mud and sand. Thalassotherapy has a curative and preventative effect on the human body.

What is thalasso?

Thalasso takes its name from the mythological Roman sea goddess, Thalassa. The ancient Romans and Greeks were already aware of the healing powers of the sea. The modern science that is thalassotherapy today has evolved from centuries of knowledge. A thalasso spa uses all the goodness the sea has to offer, including sea air, seawater, algae, mud and sand. Thalassotherapy has a curative and preventative effect on the human body.

Which thalassotherapy treatments are for you?

A thalasso programme usually begins with a consultation with a medical practitioner. During the consultation, you share any medical complaints, your wishes, expectations and goals you have for your thalasso holiday. It’s important to be clear here, as the thalasso practitioner will use this information to determine which treatments are advisable for you. These consultations are not usually included on a thalasso weekend break; check your voucher to find out. If, however, you would like to have a consultation, you can request this at the resort.

Typical thalasso spa treatments

Thalassotherapy encompasses various treatments, including the following:

Jet shower

From a distance, a Thalasso therapist directs a high-pressure hose spraying seawater onto the body parts being treated. This massages the muscles and is a particularly effective treatment for cellulite; the power of the water stimulates blood flow and promotes the drainage of built-up toxins.

Jetstream

High-pressure water jets massage the body and promote blood circulation. The entire body is treated; from bottom to top, starting with the soles of the feet and finishing with the shoulders. This thalasso treatment loosens the joints, aids weight loss, arthrosis and cellulite.

Algae wrap

Algae are rich in vitamins, minerals and elements and contain valuable nutrients for the skin, such as enzymes and oligo-elements. Thalassotherapy therefore uses them in bubble baths, creams and beauty masks. An algae wrap contains pulverised algae that are applied warm to the body. Not only is this calming and restorative, it also stimulates the absorption of the active ingredients into the skin.

Vichy-or affusion shower

This is a relaxing shower massage using fine sprays of seawater to stimulate circulation, refresh and boost. This thalasso treatment can be combined with a manual massage.

Hydrotherapy

A thalasso spa also features underwater massages, jets and mineral baths using therapeutic seawater.

Useful tips and advice before your retreat

  • At most Thalasso spas, male and female therapists treat both men and women. If you are a female who would prefer a female therapist, mention this during your consultation at the start of the retreat. Your preferences will then be taken into account.
  • Make enquiries as to the rules surrounding swimwear at the thalasso spa. The rule of thumb is that swimwear is worn in the salt water baths and swimming pools. The sauna or steam room can be used nude or wearing a towel around you. On your arrival at the Thalasso centre you will be given a bathrobe, towels and slippers.
  • Water and tea are freely available at the Thalasso spa.
