The art & science of Biohacking

October 3, 2025

Biohacking is a way to take control of your own health. It means making small, planned changes to how you eat, move, sleep or handle stress, and then checking how your body reacts. Think of it as running small experiments on yourself: you gather information—such as how well you sleep or how your blood sugar changes—and use it to improve how you feel and perform. Some people focus on basic habits like sleep or food timing. Others use advanced tools such as genetic tests or sensors. The goal is the same: to understand your own biology and make it work better.

In an era where technology and personal wellness meet, biohacking stands out as a new way to improve both body and mind. This practice combines scientific principles with self-experimenting to optimise physical performance, cognitive function, lowering stress levels and overall health improvement. It marks a shift from simply treating problems to proactively improving health.

In this blog post:

Key Areas and Examples

Sleep

Good sleep is the base for everything.

  • Sleep trackers (watch or ring) that measure sleep stages (REM and deep sleep).
  • Breathing or snoring monitor to check for problems like sleep apnoea.
  • Light and noise measurements in the bedroom to see if the environment is restful.

Movement

How well your body moves, how strong and balanced it is.

  • Movement analysis: for example a High Performance Method test that checks posture, strength and balance.
  • Heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV): shows how fast your body recovers after stress or exercise.
  • Wearables (smartwatch or ring) to track steps, training and recovery.

Cognition and Brain

Focus, memory and stress resilience.

  • Memory and reaction-time tests (apps or online tools).
  • EEG measurement (brainwave activity) at a specialist centre.
  • HRV and stress tracking with a wearable as an indirect measure of mental load.

Nutrition and Metabolism

How food affects your body.

  • Blood tests: vitamins, minerals, cholesterol, blood sugar, hormones.
  • Continuous glucose monitor (CGM) to see how meals change blood sugar.
  • Gut microbiome test to understand how your digestion works.

General Biomarkers

  • DNA or epigenetic tests to check genetic risk factors or how fast cells are ageing.
  • Regular blood panels for inflammation markers or hormone balance.
