SHA Wellness Clinic in Albir is located near the Mediterranean Sea and just an hour’s drive from Alicante. A place where luxury, health, and wellness come together. Our stay wasn’t just for lounging around. Our itinerary was packed—not only with treatments but also with meetings with doctors, therapists, and psychologists to gain deeper insights into SHA’s various programs and their holistic approach. Perched high on a rocky hill, SHA offers breathtaking views of a charming village and the surrounding mountains. The fresh sea breeze and Mediterranean climate instantly set the perfect wellness atmosphere. As we arrived, we walked past a cascading waterfall, surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant flowers. That instant holiday feeling kicked in right away!
One of the key reasons for our visit is to try out a new treatment, the cognitive rehabilitation assessment. SHA describes it as a groundbreaking addition to their spa menu. They developed this therapy after observing that many guests with memory issues or an Alzheimer’s diagnosis showed improvement when their stress levels were lowered. The resort believes that Alzheimer’s is sometimes misdiagnosed. How does it work, and what impact does it have? We are here to find out for ourselves.
A doctor assesses our brain activity and stress levels through a series of tests displayed on a large screen. Using the results, he creates a personalized treatment plan to help improve memory. It’s no surprise that at SHA Wellness Clinic, you’ll often spot guests doing memory exercises on an app as part of their program. Ilona takes the stress test and immediately feels anxious about the poor results. The doctor’s advice is clear: 'Find an activity that helps you unwind, because you’re on the path to burnout'. Meanwhile, I try a treatment with a sleep-inducing helmet. It feels a little unusual at first, but surprisingly soothing. Even as the session progresses, I notice myself getting sleepier and more relaxed.
Sleep can wait—it’s time to eat! The choices: a detox menu, a light menu with 1,000 calories a day, or the SHA menu with 1,200 calories, which includes a dessert. An easy decision. One after another, beautifully prepared healthy dishes are served. My personal favorite from the weekend was the crunchy coleslaw and the carrot cake. Jazmyn, on the other hand, was impressed by the Black Forest gateau with cherries, vanilla, and cacao. 'No sugar nor honey, yet still perfectly sweet!', she said.
SHA Wellness Clinic is an intimate resort, which makes the experience feel warm and personal. 'Hello Jazmyn and Ilona from room 107, how do you feel today? How is your program going? Let me walk you to your next appointment'. The staff go above and beyond to make you feel cared for. When we return to our rooms, everything has been perfectly prepared for a restful night. The blackout curtains are drawn, the soft lighting is on, and our pajamas are neatly folded on the bed. Even the duvet is turned down, inviting us to slip right in. The only thing missing is someone tucking us in and giving us a goodnight kiss! We take the hint and sink into the incredibly comfortable bed, surrounded by a sea of pillows. Whether it’s the sleep stimulator or just the sheer relaxation of the day, I have no idea—but I sleep like a baby.
The schedule for the next day includes two treatments and a cooking workshop. First up is a lymphatic drainage massage combined with cupping, designed to help flush toxins from the body. Based on past experiences, we were a bit concerned about ending up with large round blue marks—something that wouldn’t look too great in our swimwear by the pool. Fortunately, our worries were unnecessary. The quick and gentle cupping technique left our skin with nothing more than a healthy, rosy glow. The second treatment of the day took that glow a step further, leaving our skin feeling incredibly soft and refreshed.
The Jacuzzi, infused with aromatic oils, soft music, and calming colored lights, offered the ultimate relaxation—perhaps even more so than the massage. After a soothing soak, we were covered from head to toe in luxurious body butter and enveloped in a nourishing seaweed wrap. Like perfectly bundled mummies, we lay cocooned in warm water while hydro-jets worked their magic, stimulating circulation and easing every last bit of tension. Before long, it wasn’t just our bodies that felt weightless—our minds drifted away too. Absolute bliss.
The cooking workshop at SHA Wellness Clinic is an absolute must. The food here is simply outstanding—every bite is a burst of flavor. And yet, everything is prepared without dairy, sugar, or artificial additives. So how do they do it? We were eager to find out. During the workshop, we picked up plenty of tips and tricks while preparing three different soups and sauces. Cooking from scratch is, of course, the best way to ensure you know exactly what’s in your food. At SHA, ingredients go straight from the farm, field, or tree into the pan and onto your plate—fresh, unprocessed, and full of nutrients. We made red lentil soup, miso soup, and celery soup. But the real surprise? Cauliflower soup with sweet potato, ginger, and… raspberries. Raspberries?! An unexpected twist, but it turned out to be so delicious that we couldn’t resist adding an extra handful.
The next morning, after a refreshing walk, our SHA experience came to an end. We headed home feeling lighter, both in toxins and stress, but richer in knowledge. Our stomachs were filled with wholesome food, our bodies recharged with new energy, and our minds set on making better choices when it comes to grocery shopping and eating habits. One thing is certain—cauliflower soup with raspberries is officially on the Puurenkuur office menu for Monday!
