Exercise is important, but finding the time and motivation to start can be a challenge. A fitness holiday can be the perfect push to kickstart a healthier lifestyle. Paula traveled to Galomar, an adults-only sports hotel on the island of Madeira.
Of course, I knew that regular exercise is essential for staying healthy and fit. But I was never much of an athlete. Even on holiday, I preferred lounging by the pool with a book, simply enjoying my downtime. I loved to relax and take it easy. However, when my back started hurting and I wasn’t doing any physical activity, both my doctor and physiotherapist urged me to start moving.
'But what kind of exercise? And how would I even start? I just couldn’t find the motivation. A friend suggested going on an active holiday together, but the idea of a week of cycling or backpacking in the mountains didn’t excite me at all. Then she came up with something different—a fitness & wellness holiday. Ten days at Galomar, a beautiful resort by the sea, with a mix of different sports and activities. That sounded much more appealing. And if I didn’t feel like exercising, I could always just relax with a book and stare on the ocean. As it turned out, I barely read at all—and I didn’t miss it one bit! Every day, there were new activities to try, and I realized I was capable of more than I had thought. Cardio classes or body combat weren’t really for me, but I discovered a love for Pilates, and the sessions with the personal trainer.
Galo Resorts in Madeira consists of three hotels: Alpino Atlântico, which specializes in Ayurveda, Sentido Galosol, and Sentido Galomar. Sentido Galosol focuses on sports and fitness, and is conveniently located right next door to Galomar. What I loved about Galomar is that it’s adults-only and offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, as it sits on a cliff overlooking a private bay. Galomar also stands out for its commitment to sustainability, being fully self-sufficient in energy. With a wide variety of sports lessons and holistic classes available each week in Galosol, there’s always something to keep you active and engaged. Plus, you have full access to the facilities at the sister hotels, including their newly built spa.
After only a few days, I noticed that I was getting up differently: I had mountains of energy. It had been so long since I had felt that. The mental fatigue finally slipped away from me, and the physical fatigue felt nice. It made me feel immensely fulfilled. And I was also proud of my perseverance.
When I got back home, I decided to keep up with Pilates—twice a week, both on the mat and with a reformer. My back pain has almost completely disappeared, and I can really feel the difference in my strength and endurance. It’s incredible how much it has improved my fitness. That holiday truly changed my mindset. I realized how much better and more energized I feel when I exercise regularly. Now, I can’t imagine my life without it!
