Karina Stewart, a holistic doctor specializing in Traditional Chinese Medicine, has over 30 years of experience in various Eastern healing practices. In 2005, she founded the renowned Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary, which bridges the gap between Western medicine and the holistic philosophies of ancient Eastern healing. Karina developed a special program focused on women’s health and passionately shares her wisdom, believing that women too often put themselves last. Her message is clear: 'Have the courage to be yourself. Whether you are a mother, sister, aunt, daughter, or grandmother, by embracing who you are, you set a beautiful example for other women.' She emphasizes the importance of women connecting with their inner selves, regardless of age or life stage—whether they are young, older, mothers, career-driven, pregnant, or going through menopause. 'It’s a blessing to be a woman in today’s world, especially in this part of the world. Western women have many opportunities and the freedom to make their own choices—something that hasn’t always been the case and still isn’t in many places. But we’ve grown up in a world where Western culture dominates.'
'When I refer to Western culture, I’m specifically talking about it being male-dominated. The values that are emphasized in Western society tend to be masculine, such as being goal-driven and competitive. There’s nothing inherently wrong with these traits, but women often possess different, equally important qualities that aren’t always acknowledged or appreciated. Every person has a natural desire to feel seen, heard, and valued. Women often adapt to this culture and end up neglecting our more holistic and harmonious side, even though that side often aligns more naturally with who we are.'
Karina offers an example to illustrate her perspective: Imagine you’re standing in front of a wide river, needing to cross it. There are countless ways to get across, but the most obvious one that comes to mind is to grab a speedboat and get to the other side as quickly as possible—straightforward and efficient. However, this approach doesn’t consider the noise, which could disturb wildlife, or the environmental impact of using petrol. Women, on the other hand, might suggest a different solution, like using a sailboat. Not only would it be more environmentally friendly, but it could also make the journey itself more enjoyable. Unfortunately, the person who suggests a sailing boat might not get the recognition she deserves. Women often tend to think about others and take more factors into account.
'I believe this is why many women, at some point in their lives, feel undervalued, overlooked, and frustrated. It's often a result of not having had the chance to fully express and develop the feminine side of their personality, along with the talents that come with it. This creates an imbalance, leading to even more frustration and a sense of sadness. This is especially true for women going through menopause, as they reflect on how this imbalance has impacted them throughout their lives. I strongly believe in maintaining balance in life by recognizing and embracing our feminine strengths and talents!'
'It’s wonderful when women can come to Kamalaya, where we offer various wellness programs tailored specifically for women's health, both mental and physical. Our Radiant Bliss and Emotional Healing programs, for example, focus on deep emotional healing and balance. But if you can’t make it, I’d love to share my five key tips with you. Often, it's the small changes that can make a huge difference and lead to life transformation."
EXERSISE: Women over 35 years, I strongly recommend yoga. Especially yin yoga. Yoga that focuses on recovery and breathing.
IDEAL WEIGHT: Being overweight and underweight leads to all kinds of health problems. Healthy nutrition is most important here.
SLEEP ENOUGH: Sleep is very important to promote your longevity and health.
BREATHE IN: Take time to breathe! It lowers your cortisol (stress hormone) by 30%!
DOING NOTHING: Take regular time to do nothing. If you're on the train, don't grab your phone or computer. Leave just time blank. It will give you peace of mind.
